Student Showcase - Junior Fire Brigade
BALINGUP PRIMARY SCHOOL FIRE BRIGADE
In conjunction with the Balingup Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, Balingup Primary School has implemented Western Australia’s first afterschool junior fire brigade program.
Being in a bushfire prone area, the junior fire brigade program focuses on educating students on the dangers of fire, and how they can keep themselves and their families safe in the lead up to and during the bushfire season. The program also aims to encourage future participation within the local volunteer bush fire brigades.
This program engages students across all grades in the safe operation of fire equipment including hands on training of pumps, hoses, correct fitting techniques of nozzles and couplings through regular drills in deploying a fire truck and extinguishing targets. In addition, valuable theory is taught with students learning how to check smoke detectors in their home, how and when to make a 000 call, basic first aid, the importance of fire evacuation plans, stop, drop and roll, and being bushfire ready.
The program has been received positively by the students and within the greater community and is believed to be the first of its' kind within the primary school system.
